Let’s take the Hermès Constance – in 1959, Hermès’ artistic director Jean-Louis Dumas tasked in-house designer Catherine Chaillet with creating a new bag for the house. With sleek, minimalist lines, a long shoulder strap and elongated ‘H’ clasp, it was practical yet stylish in equal measure – all it needed was a name. Since Catherine designed the bag while pregnant, and subsequently gave birth on the day of its release, the bag was named after her new baby girl: Constance.

2. The Cartier Tank

If you’re looking to gift a timepiece with heritage, look no further than the Cartier Tank. It was first designed by Louis Cartier, the grandson of the house’s founder Louis-François Cartier, in 1917. Inspired by the harsh geometric force of the tanks in World War I, it’s astonishing just how refined and elegant the watch’s aesthetic is. It departed from the typical round shape of watches of its time, setting new standards in watch design. 3. The Hermès Kelly

Another moment that changed the course of handbag history is the origin story of the Hermès Kelly bag. It’s hard to think of a fairytale more enchanting than that of Hollywood blonde bombshell Grace Kelly. An actress at the top of her game, on a trip to Cannes in 1955 she fell in love with Prince Rainier III of Monaco. They married on live television a year later to an audience of 30 million viewers. With the world watching her every move thereafter, the newly crowned Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco attempted to conceal her blossoming baby bump from the paparazzi with a black leather Hermès Sac à Dépêches – the bag was renamed Kelly bag in 1977 in the princess’s honour.
