The new strategy limits buyers to purchasing two Classic Flap bags a year. The demand for second-hand bags from competitor Hermès has proved to cause a hike in desirability and resale prices.
Between 2020 and 2024, the Chanel Timeless Classic Flap and 2.55 Reissue recorded an average resale value increase of 57% at SACLÀB, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.9%. Regular price increases
Moreover, 2023 came and went with yet another price increase, raising the store price of a Medium Classic Flap bag to a whopping €9,700 (for reference, in 2022, it would have cost you €8,250, while 2019 only set you back €5,150).
Similarly, for 2024, Chanel price increases seemed inevitable. In conversation with the Financial Times, Chanel’s president Pavlovsky revealed that Chanel prepared for a “tougher” year as luxury brands everywhere are experiencing downturns after the post-Covid boom. Later, as articulated to WWD, Pavlovsky stated: “We’re not chasing a market positioning, but we’re raising our prices to cover our costs. Most of our competitors have already increased their prices this year. We haven’t raised ours, so yes, there will be an increase fairly soon.”
These comments, made in late 2023 and early 2024, remain relevant as Chanel price hikes have struck again. In 2024, prices have risen by approximately 6%, with the Medium Chanel Timeless now exceeding the €10,000 mark. And there’s no end in sight: further increases are already rumoured for 2025, with the iconic Chanel Timeless surpassing the Hermès Birkin in retail value. Limited supply of Lagerfeld-era bags
